Brand Mentions: Why They Matter for AI Visibility and SEO
Brand mentions are references to your brand on other sites, linked or not. Why they matter for AI visibility, how to earn them and how to monitor them.
A brand mention is any reference to your company, product or name on another website, whether or not it links to you. A linked mention is also a backlink. An unlinked mention is just your name in the text.
For years, SEOs treated unlinked mentions mainly as missed links to chase. AI search has changed that. Language models learn about brands from how often and in what context they're discussed, and published studies show that mentions line up with AI visibility more closely than backlinks do.
Linked vs unlinked brand mentions
| Linked mention | Unlinked mention | |
|---|---|---|
| What it looks like | "Stridely" in the text, as a clickable link | "Stridely" in the text, with no link |
| Counts as a backlink? | Yes | No |
| Passes link authority for Google rankings | Yes, if followed | No link to pass it through |
| Contributes to how AI systems describe you | Likely, the text is part of what they read | Likely, the text is part of what they read |
| Can be turned into the other | Already linked | Often, by asking (see link reclamation) |
The practical takeaway is that a linked mention does both jobs. It helps your rankings through the link and adds to your brand's footprint in the text AI systems learn from.
What the data says about mentions and AI visibility
The clearest data comes from Ahrefs. In a May 2025 study of 75,000 brands, it measured how strongly different factors correlated with how often a brand appeared in Google's AI Overviews.
Branded web mentions came out on top at 0.664, while backlinks scored 0.218. Branded anchors, which are effectively linked mentions, sat in between at 0.527. Ahrefs' Ryan Law put it this way: unlinked mentions have "very little impact on SEO" but a much bigger one for generative engine optimisation.
A follow-up study in December 2025 extended the analysis to ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and found the same pattern, with one addition. Mentions on YouTube correlated even more strongly with AI visibility, at about 0.737, than any other factor.
Two caveats matter. These are correlations, so big brands that are mentioned everywhere may simply be the brands AI already knows. And Ahrefs found around 26% of brands in the first study got no AI Overview mentions at all, so visibility is concentrated among the best-known names.
Why mentions might matter to AI systems
Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how their models weigh sources. But the mechanics make the correlation plausible.
- Language models learn associations from text, so a brand that's regularly discussed alongside a topic is more likely to be connected with it
- AI search tools retrieve pages like reviews, comparisons and roundups to answer "best" and "which" questions, and those pages name brands
- Mentions on high-profile sites appear in more of the material AI systems read
That's reasoning, not documented fact, so treat it as a working theory.
How to earn more brand mentions
| Tactic | Mentions earned | Links earned | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital PR | High, in news and trade press | Often | Brands with data or stories to share |
| Journalist requests and expert comment | Medium | Sometimes | Founders and specialists |
| Getting into comparison and "best of" articles | High for buying queries | Often | Products in competitive categories |
| Podcast appearances | Medium | Usually in show notes | Founders with a point of view |
| YouTube reviews and collaborations | High, and YouTube correlates strongly | Sometimes | Physical and software products |
| Community participation (forums, Reddit) | Medium | Rarely, usually nofollow | Brands with real expertise to share |
| Sponsorships and partnerships | Medium | Sometimes, should be sponsored | Local and niche brands |
Write for people, not for the model. Forced, spammy mentions on forums tend to get removed by moderators, and Google's spam policies treat optimised links in forum comments as link spam.
How to monitor brand mentions
You can't improve what you don't track. Most brand monitoring tools fall into three groups.
- Free alerts. Google Alerts emails you when your brand name appears in newly indexed pages. It's limited but costs nothing
- SEO tool alerts. Ahrefs and Semrush both offer mention tracking alongside their backlink data, which makes it easy to spot unlinked mentions
- Dedicated monitoring tools. Social listening platforms track mentions across news, blogs, forums and social media
For AI visibility specifically, trackers such as Ahrefs Brand Radar sample AI answers to show where your brand is named. Our LLM SEO guide covers those tools.
Turning unlinked mentions into links
Every unlinked mention is a chance to pick up a link from a site that already knows you. The process is short.
- Find mentions without a link to your site
- Check the page is on a relevant, real site
- Email the author or editor with the sentence and a suggested link
- Keep it brief and helpful, and don't push if they decline
Our full guide to link reclamation has templates and tips. Each successful ask adds a new referring domain and keeps the mention working for AI visibility too.
The short version
- A brand mention is any reference to your brand online, linked or not
- In Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility far more than backlinks (0.664 against 0.218)
- YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation of all in Ahrefs' follow-up study
- These are correlations, not proof, and AI companies don't publish how they weigh sources
- Linked mentions do double duty, helping both rankings and AI visibility, so ask for the link when you can
