Link Building Guide

Link Building Tools: What Each One Does and What It Costs

The link building tools worth paying for, the free ones that cover the basics, and which tool does which job, with pricing checked in October 2026.

Link building tools do four jobs: show you who links to your competitors, help you find new sites to pitch, find the right contact, and manage the outreach. A fifth job, monitoring what you've built, is mostly covered by free tools.

No single tool does all of it well. Most teams pair one backlink database (Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic or Moz) with an outreach tool, and lean on Google Search Console for their own site.

Prices below were checked on each vendor's own website in October 2026. Several vendors show prices in your local currency, so you may see different figures.

These are the big databases. Each runs its own crawler, so link counts and authority scores differ from tool to tool. Pick one and stick with it so your numbers stay comparable over time.

Tool What it's best at Entry price (as listed, October 2026) Free option
Ahrefs Backlink index, referring domains, Content Explorer for prospecting Lite $129 a month; Starter $29 a month with more limited features Ahrefs Free and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own
Semrush All-round SEO suite with backlink and gap analysis SEO Toolkit Pro $139.95 a month (Semrush knowledge base) Free plan with limited daily reports, plus a seven-day trial

Ahrefs' higher plans were listed at $249 (Standard), $449 (Advanced) and $1,499 a month (Enterprise, annual commitment). Majestic Pro was $99.99 a month and Moz Pro's Medium and Large plans were $179 and $299 a month on monthly billing. Semrush's own pricing page also shows newer bundled plans whose names and prices vary by region, so check it directly before buying.

Whichever you use, remember that Domain Rating, Domain Authority and Trust Flow are third-party estimates, not Google metrics. The guide to Domain Rating vs Domain Authority explains what they measure.

Prospecting and outreach tools

Once you know what kind of sites you want, these tools find contacts and manage the emails.

Tool Job Entry price (as listed, October 2026) Notes
BuzzStream Outreach CRM: prospect lists, templates, follow-ups, tracking Starter $49 a month (one user) Growth $174 and Professional $424 a month; free trial
Pitchbox Outreach platform for agencies and teams Pro $300 a month, or $210 a month billed annually All standard plans need a one-year commitment; demo and trial on request
Hunter Finding and verifying email addresses Free plan with 50 credits a month; Starter shown at €49 a month when checked Prices were displayed in euros for our region
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Crawling sites for broken links and resource pages Free for up to 500 URLs per crawl; licence $279 (£199) a year Also the standard tool for internal linking audits

You don't need an outreach platform to start. A spreadsheet and your normal inbox will handle a few dozen pitches a month. A CRM earns its cost once you're tracking hundreds of conversations or several people are emailing at once. Whatever you send, the outreach email templates guide covers what to say.

You can do a surprising amount without paying anything.

Free tool What it gives you Limits
Google Search Console Top linking sites, top linked pages and linking text, straight from Google Your own verified site only, and not every link is listed
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools Ahrefs backlink data for sites you can verify Your own sites only
Screaming Frog (free) Broken links, redirects and internal link structure 500 URLs per crawl
Majestic free tools Basic backlink lookups Limited data without a subscription
Google search operators Finding resource pages, guest post guidelines and mentions Manual and slow, but free

Search Console is the one every site should have set up. It's the only link data that comes from Google itself, and it's what you'd use for a backlink audit or a manual action.

It depends on your budget and how many links you're building.

Situation Sensible stack
Just starting, no budget Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog free, a spreadsheet
One site, steady campaign One paid backlink database at entry level, plus Hunter's free tier
Freelancer or small agency A mid-tier backlink database plus a CRM such as BuzzStream
Agency running many clients Higher-tier database, a team outreach platform, email verification

This is a rule of thumb rather than a formula. The biggest waste is paying for two overlapping backlink databases when one would do.

Tools find opportunities and keep you organised. They don't make a site want to link to you.

Every tool can export ten thousand "prospects", but the work that gets links is picking the right fifty, having something worth linking to, and writing a pitch that a busy editor will answer. No metric replaces opening a site and asking whether a real reader would trust it. The how to get backlinks guide covers that side of the job.

The short version

  • Most teams need one backlink database and, once volume grows, one outreach tool
  • Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic and Moz all measure links differently, so pick one and stay consistent
  • Entry prices in October 2026 ranged from $49.99 a month (Majestic Lite) to $139.95 a month (Semrush SEO Toolkit Pro), with Ahrefs Starter at $29 for lighter use
  • Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools give you your own link data free
  • Tools find prospects, but the links come from the asset and the pitch
